The anatomy of a confident person

Updated: Nov 24, 2020

The anatomy of a confident person.

We have all been in a situation where to save our dignity, we have stopped ourselves from taking opportunities, asking for a promotion, or even asking for help from others. Many of us have shielded away because we did not feel confident enough and stayed in our cocoon. Occasionally, when we dare to look around, we see many people who walk the walk and talk the talk. It seems that everything is so perfect in their lives. They are so confident and their lives are together. So, what is the difference between us, and how are some people able to project so much confidence? How do you get these characteristics where it seems that you have brushed your shortcomings aside?

Let's break down the autonomy of a confident person and understand the body language and their general behavior.

1. Relaxed body posture - When you are relaxed, you allow others around you to feel relaxed as well. This is very comforting to others especially if they are tensed. Thus it makes you look more approachable and likable.

To look relaxed, spread yourself out comfortably. You can take more space while your sitting, walking, or moving.

2. Make eye contact - Eye contact is an important nonverbal social cue that asserts your command. It makes you appear more likable and competent.

If you are telling a story to a group of people, then look around and make eye contact with everyone for a few seconds. It makes others think that you are talking personally to them and you appear more pleasant. If you are in a meeting, while making eye contact, nod occasionally to appear interested.

3. Keeping your emotional reaction in check - It's easy to get overwhelmed sometimes. It's natural. We are flawed creatures after all.

Allow yourself to understand the tides of emotions but don't get swayed away with them.

Don't react initially. Stay calm, and remind yourself to breathe. This will make you look in command of your situation and help others to stay calm in stressful situations as well. Being non-reactive to triggering situations shows that you are not pressured by what's happening around you and you are in charge.

4. Don't be afraid to laugh at yourself - We are always making a conscious effort to mask our flaws, and appear perfect. Our skewed beliefs of self-importance stop us from enjoying yourself. In a fear of dropping our elegance, and making a complete fool of ourselves, we don't open to others. But then, we are only humans. It's important to understand that slips happen sometimes and we should be okay at laughing at ourselves as well.

5. Wear clothes that make you feel good - Wearing good clothes makes a difference in how you are perceived by yourself and by others. When you look in the mirror and you think that you are looking good then it makes a change in your overall behavior, especially your mood and thus your facial expressions. Similarly, wearing good clothes makes an impression on others that you have a put-together life. Thus you appear more confident.

6. Things will be alright - If you are reeling in a thought process that you need to feel confident to look confident then you are welcoming a life of utmost disappointment with open arms. Nobody has everything sorted out or knows everything but they still move forward to reach their destination.

Listen to the little voice that says,"I'll try again even if I fail."

Many people are afraid to take any chances to not make a fool of themselves in front of others. What if you fail in your endeavors? Things will not end, your life will not end. In fact, you will have learned what not to do to fail again. You can try again and rise from your ashes. Some say that it will be alright even when things go wrong.

Listen to the little voice that says, "I'll try again if I fail. If I have done it before then I can do it again." It's the strength that says I'll be alright if things don't go my way.

Remind yourself that it's gonna be alright.

Hope this was helpful. Share with us your advice as well.

Have a wonderful day.
