The Myth of Happiness.

ree

The conception of happiness is very alluring. It entails that you have attained everything in life and thus shed all the worries. Of course, it is neither possible nor logical.

I have a close friend come and tell me that I don't look happy enough. And if possible, I should smile more often. After a while, it became annoying. Because I was happy. More than that, I was at peace. I didn't feel the need to plaster a smile on my face to express my peacefulness or happiness all the time. I know that they wanted good, but their constant nudging was baffling.

"Men can only be happy when they do not assume that the object of life is happiness." - George Orwell

That incident got me thinking. What is happiness? Etymologically speaking, it is an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, and fulfillment. A state is always flowing, especially an emotional disposition. We are not in the same plight always, mentally or physically. Similarly, it is not possible to stay in the same emotional state as well. Instead of clinging to one state, it is better to adapt to our changing state.

It is interesting to note that the internet floods you with numerous posts about how to find happiness. This paints the other emotions as negative. It further goes on to potray that outward appearance weighs more than our actual state of mind. This fabrication is very detrimental to our mental state. It does nothing to teach us to accept our feelings and situations or how to be at peace with them.

Our temperament is relative. It's not always the same. As the situation changes, the color changes. What is happiness for you now can be sadness in the next events. What was scary for us before, we look back at it with laughter and happiness. Similarly, some of our best memories, are sad because the people are not with us anymore. It is not conventional to be happy all the time. Not to project any misunderstandings, we are humans after all. We can present more emotions than happiness. People who have achieved eternal rest are happy, but I'm not. We deal with different situations all the time that may not always be in our favor. In my opinion, we should be allowed to express ourselves, and more than that we should be allowed to be human.

We fervently want to be in happiness and deliver it on our outward appearances. But, happiness comes and goes. Accept your inner thoughts and fervor. It is more meaningful to choose to live our lives to the best and with meaning.
