One Fine Sunday – A Short Story About Life’s Simple Joys

One Fine Sunday

One fine Sunday morning, three people were having their breakfast in the living room in their apartment.

Mrs. Malhotra - There was someone at the gate yesterday.

Ajay – Hm.

Mrs. Malhotra- They kept shouting Ajay, Ajay….

Ajay - And?

Mrs. Malhotra - No one was opening the gate?

Ajay - When was it?

Mrs. Malhotra - They had to wait for a long time…

Ajay – When did it happen?

Mrs. Malhotra - I went out to check.

Ajay – Were you alone?

Mrs. Malhotra – No. There were two people outside.

Ajay ( slightly flustered) – Ma, answer my question first. When did this happen?

Mrs. Malhotra - Yesterday night.

Ajay - Ok. Time? Was I home by then?

Mrs. Malhotra – I don’t keep looking at the clock all the time. I have other things to do.

Ajay ( ignores the remark) - Was I home?

Mrs. Malhotra - Oh yes.

Ajay - And? What was I doing?

Mrs. Malhotra - Oh, everybody had gone to bed.

Ajay ( controls his anger and lets out a deep breath) - It was probably after midnight then. It could have been dangerous. Whatever. What did they want?

Mrs. Malhotra - They kept knocking and no one was answering.

Ajay - Why didn’t you wake me then?

Mrs. Malhotra - Because you were asleep! I couldn’t have bothered you…..

Ajay ( stops his mother mid way) - Ok fine. What did they want?

Mrs. Malhotra - I don’t know.

Ajay ( confused ) - But you said you went out to check?

Mrs. Malhotra - Yes and they were two of them and they kept knocking for a long time.

Ajay - Then you saw through the peep hole.

Mrs. Malhotra - No I went out.

Ajay ( even more confused) - You went out where?

Mrs. Malhotra - In the balcony.

Ajay ( confused ) - Why in the balcony?

Mrs. Malhotra - Because they were calling for Ajay for long time. I went out to check who they were.

After a while ,he came out!

Ajay (couldn’t follow the events anymore)– Who came out?

Mrs. Malhotra- Ajay. He opened the gate.

Ajay – But I never did because you never woke me up.

Mrs. Malhotra – They were knocking and shouting for such a long time, the whole neighborhood got disturbed.

Ajay (angry) - Forget it! I have to spend twice the energy to make out heads and tails of what you say. I don’t want to hear anymore.

Seema ( Ajay's wife)- She meant to say there were 2 people at the gate of the building for Ajay, our caretaker.
